‘Operation Red Sea’ — a Chinese triumph
DIRECTED by Hong Kong filmmaker Dante Lam on a budget of US$72 million, “Operation Red Sea” is about a Chinese army rescue mission in the Middle East. The film is widely hailed as one of the most ambitious Chinese action films ever made.
Lam, known for Hong Kong gangster and action movies, became a renowned figure after the 2016 hit “Operation Mekong.”
Based on the 2011 Mekong river massacre, “Operation Mekong” achieved a total box office of 1.18 billion yuan (US$187 million), becoming the sixth highest-earning movie of the year.
“Operation Red Sea” is a followup to that smash hit. Loosely based on a massive evacuation during the 2015 Yemeni civil war, the film tells of how Chinese marines evacuated foreign nationals and almost 600 Chinese citizens from Yemen’s southern port of Aden when a military coup broke out in the North African country.
Such action movies started to appear recently and got popular as the Chinese military is increasingly playing an important role in overseas rescues and peacekeeping missions.
In “Operation Red Sea,” the Jiaolong Assault Team is one of the special forces of the People’s Liberation Army. The squad strategically makes a two-pronged rescue attempt but is tragically ambushed, resulting in heavy casualties.
At the same time, the terrorist leader manages to steal the incriminating evidence against him along with essential material for the manufacture of nuclear arms.
The Jiaolong Assault Team is fully aware of the importance of ensuring that such material is forever removed from the terrorists’ hands.
Director Lam said he wanted to produce something more than gunfights and explosions.
Focus on the individuals is a significant change for “Operation Red Sea.” A non-military female character — a war correspondent — was added to swerve away from the stereotyped muscular tough image of soldiers.
