Pianist Sun Yingdi to play Schumann

PIANIST Sun Yingdi will collaborate with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra on April 4 in Shumann's "Piano Concerto in A Minor."

The orchestra, under the baton of new chief conductor Stephane Deneve, will also perform works by Berlioz, Debussy and Richard Strauss at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.

Sun, born in 1980 in Shanghai, won first prize at the prestigious 7th International Franz Liszt Piano Competition held in 2005, as well as many other awards. He has performed widely with leading orchestras.

He teaches at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he received his master's degree.

The piano concerto is Schumann's only piano concerto and it is not often performed in China. It was first performed in concert by Schumann's wife Clara Wieck in Leipzig in 1846.

Deneve has led the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra since the 2011-2012 season. The 42-year-old French native graduated from the Paris Conservatoire and began his career with the Orchestre de Paris and Paris National Opera. He worked as assistant to Georges Pr锚tre and Seiji Ozawa. Deneve has been guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra.

In Stuttgart, Deneve succeeds Roger Norrington, principal conductor from 1998 to 2011. He influenced the orchestra's style, including minimum use of vibrato, and is known for creating the "Stuttgart Sound."
