Piano legend's city debut

LEGENDARY Hungarian-born pianist Andras Schiff makes his city debut at Shanghai Concert Hall on June 14, as the closing performance of the venue's season.
The 60-year-old, who is a British citizen, is widely regarded as one of the top pianists of his generation from Hungary, together with Zoltan Kocsis and Dezso Ranki.
While Schiff is best known by Chinese classical music fans for his interpretation of Bach's "The Well-Tempered Clavier," his program for the Shanghai concert includes Schumann's "Davidsbundlertanze," Bartok's "Sonatina," and Beethoven's "Piano Sonata No. 21 in C major (Waldstein)" and "Sonata No. 23 in F Minor (Appasionata)."
These selected pieces by the three great composers are all very different.
"Davidsbundlertanze" is a classic Schumann piece which features many of his composing characteristics, such as staccato chords and changes in syncopation and key touching.
Bartok's "Sonatina," on the other hand, is more about rhythm, with the piano taking a percussion-like role. "Waldstein" by Beethoven tells of his love for the nature, while "Appasionata" demonstrate his passion.
Meanwhile, Schiff's keeping it a secret whether Bach's "The Well-Tempered Clavier" will be played as an encore.
For the Shanghai concert, Schiff is bringing the tuner with whom he has worked for years. The pianist is renowned for emphasizing that a good start is crucial to every concert. To achieve this he will sit at his piano on stage before every concert and imagine the first note.
