Playful absurdist plays in French
NINE short absurdist pieces will be presented by the Francophone Theater Troupe of Shanghai next month at the Children's Art Theater of the China Welfare Institute.
The pieces for both adults and children are part of the comedy "Theater Without Animals" by French playwright Jean-Michel Ribes to be staged from April 18 to 21. It will be performed in French.
The pieces feature human behavior in everyday places with absurdist humor, affection and a touch of sarcasm.
They include a couple's argument after a theater performance, the philosophy of life in a hairdressing salon, a man unable to come up with a name for his baby daughter, and a giant ballpoint pen in the middle of a living room.
The theater troupe has been performing in Shanghai for 13 years.
"We are all theater lovers and volunteers in this adventure to put on a show every year for the francophone community," says Valentine Sorret, a Frenchwoman who has lived in Shanghai almost nine years. She is the author of "Shanghai Snapshots," a collection of vignettes.
The 14 actors are French nationals, other Europeans, and Chinese.
