Program of Bruckner, Brahms, Wagner
STAATSKAPELLE Dresden, founded in 1598, has been conducted by Richard Wagner, Carl Weber and Richard Strauss, and Beethoven once called it "the best orchestra in Europe."
Today and tomorrow in Shanghai, the renowned German orchestra will be led by Christian Thielemann, the principal conductor who took up the baton only this summer. He is a magisterial maestro famous for the powerful late Austro-Germanic works. He conducted the Munich Philharmonic from 2004 to 2011.
The Shanghai program features Bruckner's "Symphony No. 7," Brahms' "Symphony No. 1," Wagner's "Rienzi" Overture from "Tristan und Isolde," and the Prelude and "Liebestod," which comprise the beginning and ending of the work "Tristan und Isolde." Both are considered difficult.
Thielemann was the rehearsal assistant for Austrian master conductor Herbert von Karajan. He researches traditions of German and Austrian classical music, based not only on the music but the history, architecture and even furniture of Berlin to get close to the spirit of the era.
"I try to dig out the musical heritage of this part slowly," he says.
Zhang Yandi, vice principal of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, says, "German and Austrian music is known as deep, complex and profound, and Thielemann with his orchestra are excellent interpreters." He says some members of the audience may wish to listen to tracks of the music in advance "so they can enjoy a more authentic and exciting experience."
Date: October 30-31, 7:30pm
Venue: Lyric Theater of Shanghai Grand Theater, 300 People's Ave
Tickets: 80-2,280 yuan
