Pudong arts and culture fest in full swing
FROM symphony and ballet to folk music and ballroom dancing, the Pudong Arts and Culture Festival is in full swing.
The two-month gala, which started in late September, runs through mid-November and is now at its high point. Last year more than a million visitors attended.
The festival features more than 150 shows, including 80 performed by Pudong locals from all walks of life, in addition to painting and sculpture exhibitions, various concerts as well as modern dramas.
In collaboration with the China Arts Association, around 1,000 masterworks of Chinese ink-wash paintings, calligraphy and carved seals are exhibited. Ancient sculpture, porcelain and wide range of antiques are also on display, as well as Tibetan Buddhist paintings, or thangka.
Musicians and dancers from Germany, Italy, Spain and Russia will perform at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center. The ballet "Swan Lake" and opera "Carmen" will be staged.
Communities and neighborhoods across the Pudong New Area are also getting involved. They present exhibitions of photography, paintings and handiwork, as well as qipao fashion shows, hip-hop performance, folk operas and yangko (a rural folk dance), story-telling, comedy, T-shirt painting and other entertainment.
The "Chinese Ink Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition" features around 200 works by amateurs, selected from around 500. The oldest artist is 81-year-old Wang Wenjuan, who copied the ancient calligraphy "A Student's Discipline."
"The competition shows the achievements of traditional arts and also offers a platform for ordinary people to make friends and exchange their views," says Wang Xichang, director of the Pudong New Area Culture and Arts Center.
The festival also draws on talent throughout the Yangtze River Delta. The Ballroom Dance Competition involves more than 800 dancers from Shanghai and Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces, ranging in age from less than 6 years to almost 80 years.
The DIY Handiwork Contest is another highlight that has received more than 1,000 interesting works from people around Shanghai, including embroidery, paper-cutting, basket weaving, furniture painting, doll making and other crafts.
One item is a dragon made from metal wire, clay, paper and bamboo. Retiree Shen Zhenmin's "Vase and Flower" is made from homespun cloth. A 12-year-old student, Zhe Zhe, made a 2-meter-tall giraffe using papier mache.
A series of forums and lectures are held on a range of subjects.
