Raising the bar on cocktails and skylines

SHANGHAI'S hotels can have some of the city's most stylish watering holes, with bars that have sweeping views over the skyline and great deals on well-made cocktails.

The bars at The Peninsula Shanghai, Park Hyatt and JW Marriott all have their own unique style and offer a range of creatively designed drinks to sip while taking in stunning views.

The Peninsula's Sir Elly's is Shanghai's newest hotel bar and features a 13th floor rooftop bar with uninterrupted views across the Huangpu River to the Pudong New Area and down the length of the Bund.

Ideal for a nightcap under the stars, Sir Elly's Bar and Terrace offers a relaxed but sophisticated atmosphere; decor features Chinese lacquer, highly polished wood, dark walls and velvet upholstery.

Upstairs on the terrace are other bars and a range of relaxed seating where a drink and a range of bite-sized snacks can be enjoyed in a romantic setting with the city's skyline as the backdrop.

It's a perfect place to enjoy a glass of the Peninsula's signature champagne designed for the hotel by acclaimed French wine maker Deutz Champagnes.

Deutz and The Peninsula last week celebrated more than 20 years of partnership with a special wine dinner prepared by Sir Elly's internationally acclaimed French chef Arnaud Berthelier.

Bringing his own exceptional brand of French-inspired modern European cuisine, Berthelier partnered five courses with a range of Deutz Champagnes and Delas wines.

Sir Elly's Bar and Terrace held a luxurious Champagne and caviar opening party over the weekend.

Guests enjoyed 14 of Berthelier's caviar canap?? creations while enjoying Perrier-Jou"t Champagne and a guest DJ.

Boasting the world's highest bar, the Park Hyatt's Music Room on the 92nd floor of the World Financial Center in Pudong mixes great drinks and a live band to produce a party atmosphere.

The six-member Deluxe Band performs every Monday through Saturday and guests can enjoy a creative drinks list created by sommelier Jean-Marc Nolant.

Nolant has created a range of 20 signature cocktails using avant-garde techniques and creative infusions of flavors.

"Our goal is to emphasize the perfect balance of a cocktail by a controlled interaction of the four human taste perceptions (sweet, salty, acid, sour/bitter)," says Nolant.

The Bloodless Mary Martini is one of the Music Room's most popular drinks and showcases how Nolant blends inspiration from past classics and new mixology.

The clear colorless drink has all the flavor of freshly crushed vegetables by infusing organic fruits and vegetables such as red chillies, red and yellow peppers, celery and yellow and green tomatoes at low temperatures into Wyborowa Vodka.

The bar team then painstakingly extract the natural water from locally grown grape tomatoes to create this flavor-packed cocktail that is a unique take on the conventional Bloody Mary.

While sipping a cocktail one can enjoy Deluxe playing the hottest music of the last four decades from R&B, funk, hip-hop, rock and jazz.

The Music Room also has a popular Ladies' Night every Wednesday from 8:30pm to 10:30pm. All ladies can enjoy free-flow sparkling wine while dancing to Deluxe band and DJ JazzAmar.

One of the JW Marriott's most popular drinks promotions is back with the 98 yuan (US$14.30) all-you-can-drink offer sure to quench some summer thirsts this season.

From 6pm to 8pm guests can enjoy as many martinis as they like at JW's Lounge on the 40th floor of the JW Marriott.

With views over People's Park and the city's skyline, there are 10 martinis to choose from or guests can challenge the bartender to make a martini they have created themselves.

While sipping signature drinks or enjoying one of JW Lounge's own creations, guests can enjoy not only the views but live jazz as well.

A perfect venue for a twilight drink, this relaxed, cozy bar is great for a friends gathering or an after-work drink. For those looking for a quick bite, the place is JW's California Grill, with a range of North American brasserie offerings.

This includes the recently introduced seafood cocktail for 98 yuan. All prices are subject to an additional 15 percent surcharge. Bars and cocktails
