Reality game tests wits to free mermaid
People tired of PC and video games can play a live reality puzzle rescue game "Tears of the Mermaid" testing intelligence, creativity and teamwork.
Designed by Japanese game producer and director Kato Takao, it has attracted more than 500,000 players in Japan alone last year. Through July 29, it will be staged at Shanghai Joy City, where each visitor will have a chance to play.
The game is inspired by a fairytale in which a mermaid is imprisoned by an evil spell. Only her tears can ignite a holy grail, defeat the villain and rescue her. Within 60 minutes, players are required to solve several puzzles and find clues around the shopping mall.
According to Chiba Kazutoshi, a producer of the game, "Tears of the Mermaid" targets smart young urbanites and it inspires them to release their creativity through teamwork.
"To solve all the puzzles, players need to gain the ability to see things from a different perspective," he says.
Winning teams will receive limited versions of a wax seal, and may have an opportunity to tour Denmark, birthplace of Hans Christian Anderson who wrote the famous fairytale, "The Little Mermaid."
