'Red Mansions' as lavish Kunqu Opera

A Dream of Red Mansions" has been adapted into a variety of stage and screen versions over the past year. But the Kunqu Opera interpretation of the famous classic novel is considered one of the most artistic.

From July 6 to 7, the Northern Kunqu Opera Theater will stage a full panorama version of "A Dream of Red Mansions" at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.

The production was a sensation at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing last year.

It was hailed by both audience and critics and was honored "an outstanding play" at the 12th China Theater Festival.

The play is more than just a tragic love story, it provides insight into the rise and fall of a large feudal family and the then Chinese society.

According to Ling Jinyu, a producer, the show is an aesthetically pleasing blend of 600-year-old Kunqu Opera art form and the 200-year-old gem of world literature.

"Unlike many other versions, this one will feature a lot of talented young performers," Ling said, adding that exquisite costumes and lavish settings will also attract a young audiences."

Next month the play will be staged during the Beijing Culture Week in London.
