Russian ‘Swan Lake’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty’

During the National Day holiday the Russian State Ballet will present Tchaikovsky’s most best-loved ballets “Swan Lake” and “Sleeping Beauty” to local audience.

“Swan Lake” has been presented in many different versions since its debut in 1877. Every year it is performed by several hundred ballet troupes around the world.

The Russian State Ballet’s acclaimed interpretation not only retains the flavor of the original but also features stunning staging and costumes.

“Swan Lake” will be staged on September 30 and October 1, and “Sleeping Beauty” on October 2 and 3 at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.

The evil black swan’s 32-circle spin (fouettés en tournant) on a single foot is one of the highlights.

Based on a Russian folk tale, the four-act ballet “Swan Lake” tells the story of Princess Odette who is turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer.

The show has been acclaimed in many countries and the dancers praised for superb skills that combine strength with grace.

“Sleeping Beauty,” about another fairytale curse, features lavish scenes and joyous melodies.
