‘Sleeping Beauty’ gets a makeover

GERMAN ballet company Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz is bringing a contemporary version of “Sleeping Beauty” to Shanghai later this month.

One of Tchaikovsky’s most famous ballets, “Sleeping Beauty” is not staged as often in China compared with his other favorites “Swan Lake” and “The Nutcracker.”

The classic fairy tale of Princess Aurora falling into a deep sleep only to be awakened by a kiss from a prince is an all-time favorite.

The adapted ballet in three acts was first performed in 1890 and the original production was choreographed by Marius Petipa.

This contemporary version by Gärtnerplatz is choreographed by the company’s artistic director Karl Alfred Schreiner.

Born in Salzburg, Austria, Schreiner studied at the Ballet School of Vienna State Opera and worked at the Vienna State Opera from 1995 to 2000. He started choreographing in 1999 and has collaborated with various artists and companies, including working with Keith Warner and Josef E. Köpplinger for “Die Frau ohne Schatten” at the Hamburg State Opera.

Schreiner has been the artistic director at Gärtnerplatz since the 2012-2013 season.

The history of the company in Munich dates back to 1865 when it was primarily an opera house. It was renamed in 1955 and it began to focus on ballet and contemporary dance.

Schreiner says his goal is new forms of artistic expression built on the basis of classical repertoires.
