Soft colors, girly looks are in for spring/summer

EXAGGERATED prettiness and ultra femininity are the overriding trends for spring and summer 2012 collections.

Refreshing pastels, sorbet tones and plenty of neutrals reveal the prettiness and romanticism from several designers including Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, and Nicole Farhi.

Light, airy shades of pink, yellow, green, blue, orange and velvet have appeared in ready-to-wear lines with various techniques of styling and color blocking.

The Spanish high-street fashion label Mango recently had its spring/summer 2012 fashion show at Friendship Hall Shanghai Exhibition Center.

The runway show was sprinkled with must-have colors of the season: pale yellow, coral, orange, pink, white and black. The focus on natural, pastel and sorbet tones work together to create interesting color combinations and once again prove femininity is the main story this season.

As a counterpoint to flowing shapes and clean lines, there is a clear 1960s influence, particularly in dresses. Light fabrics, pleats and gathers provide movement and add femininity to the line.

The soft hues are not just for daytime either. The possibilities of how you can wear any of these pieces are endless. The line goes from casual and cool to elegant and sophisticated. From a boyish yet refined nude pink blazer paired with denim cut-offs, to evening and party appropriate black dresses and chic jumpsuits, the collection is versatile and made to suit all styles.

On the accessory side, a series of handbags, belts, high-heels and jewelry pieces complete the outfits for a lighthearted feel.

France-based Bread n Butter launched its latest collection with a piano garden theme. It focused on soft fabrics and ladylike tailoring with pastel colors.

Egg yolk yellow, orange marmalade, turquoise, rouge pink and candy purple accentuate loveliness and warmth while the use of folds, lace and lightweight materials allow for some sexiness. The collection is very much about a sweet girl look.

The ESCADA White Label collection is also about aquarelle colors with silk, sweats, jersey and retro print looks added into the mix.

Colors come in a palette of delicate pales, as the designs are calm and serene - fresh and clean, worked in the simplest silhouettes. Sand or camel is a key color for tops and summer knits. Soft smocks and sporty looks mark the easy but chic appeal. Volumes are soft with draped cape effects.

Different labels, from high fashion to street style, offer pretty looks that are soft, fresh, modern and confident. The girly, feminine palette is very versatile in creating daytime or nighttime looks.

Fashion changes quickly and this is why many love it so much. The fresh mix of pastels appears just in time to give fashion a color makeover. So, get ready for the season with a mix of elegant silhouettes, relaxed and easy styles, pastel color combinations, neutral-tone dresses, soft trench coats and tailored jackets.

The downside of pastels is that lighter colors tend to visually add bulk. For women without a perfect figure, it's often wiser to add just a touch of pale colors or wear accessories with pastel hues.
