Sparks fly in touching tale of romance
QIXI Festival, which falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, is also known as Chinese Valentine's Day because of a beautiful love story from the old days.
According to the tale, an honest and warm-hearted boy named Niu Lang falls in love with Zhi Nu, a fairy from Heaven.
They get married and have a son and daughter. When Zhi's parents find out about the marriage, they become angry and bring Zhi back to Heaven. However, they eventually are touched by the couple's love and devotion to one another and allow them to reunite once a year on the double seventh day.
The festival used to only belong to young women, especially single women, who prayed to the Weaver Maid Star asking for fruit. This custom originated in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) and it later spread to Japan and South Korea.
Many Qixi Festival activities will be held tomorrow in Shanghai.
