Steely structures inspire art photos
Steel is a cold, hard metal but many sculptors choose it and steel can take many artistic and inspiring architectural forms.
An exhibition, "Charms of Steel Structures," features 350 pictures captured by 20 Shanghai photographers who traveled around the country, turning their lens on steel. The show is organized by the Shanghai Photographers' Association.
"This is the first photo exhibition of steel structure in China," says Chen Weizhong, the curator and chief photographer of the show, which has been in the works for several years. "Our team trudged around many places in the country and each pictures is the culmination of the photographer's skill and wisdom."
To find the right angle, photographers have gone to great lengths. "We have had to stand in positions that demand courage and smarts," Chen says.
Hotels, stadiums, airports, transport hubs and many other structures reveal curves, lines and spaces, like a piece of art.
"I waited until midnight in a Beijing winter to take the perfect picture of a highway," Chen says. "It was freezing cold, but I captured the highway with almost no cars."
A photo album will also be issued at the end of December.
Date: December 6-9, 9am-4pm
Address: West Hall of Shanghai Library, 1555 Huaihai Rd M.
