Swedish fairytale staged in Chinese

THE Wonderful Adventures of Nils" by Swedish writer Selma Lagerlof is the only children's fairytale book to have won the Nobel Prize for Literature (1909). It has been adapted in many ways and turned into a Japanese animation series, but a new show presents the fantasy in Chinese.
After a successful European tour, "The Wonderful Adventures of Nils" will be presented in Shanghai on Thursday and Friday. Directed by Yu Molin, it received the Gold Prize for performance at the 8th International Children's Art Festival in Budapset, Hungary, last year.
The play is the story of a 14-year-old boy, Nils, who is magically diminished in size; he is so small that he can travel through Sweden on the back of a goose. Along the way he learns about nature, geography and folklore and encounters interesting characters.
"The charm of a show adapted from a literary masterpiece is universal," says Deng Chixiang, chairman of the Guangzhou Performance/Film Ltd, the show's producer. "The light-hearted drama is also inspiring and thoughtful, teaching children virtues and the importance of studying science and culture."
Deng says the company is working on a modern teen and campus drama, addressing contemporary topics and employing Internet buzzwords.
