‘The Bodyguard’ returns as a musical

THE romance of Rachel Marron and Frank Farmer is back with the musical “The Bodyguard” that will be staged at Shanghai Culture Square till July 16.

The production starring Carole Stennett and Stuart Reid will be exactly the same as the one presented at West End, according to Michael Harrison, who produced the musical in the United Kingdom in 2012 and 2016 as well for the China tour this time.

The musical was based largely on the popular 1992 movie of the same name. The main plot in the movie was retained, while many new elements for stage setting and choreography were added. The biggest difference lies in the musical scores.

“There were only five to six songs in the movie, which is far from sufficient for a musical. We needed to extend the scores,” said Harrison.

Rather than creating new songs, about 15 songs were carefully selected from Whitney Houston’s hits to serve the plot and the character’s moods, including the hit number “I Will Always Love You,” “I’m Every Woman” and “I Have Nothing.”

Selecting Houston’s songs for the musical also put burden on the cast as the lead actress must meet the audience’s high expectation on the singing part.

“Everybody knows Houston’s songs. It is inevitable that there will be a lot of comparison while watching the musical. It will be hard to satisfy the audience if the heroine cannot sing well,” said David Ian, another producer of the musical’s China tour.

Apart from the rich stage setting, more than 400 costumes are being used for the musical.

The heroine alone is expected to change about a dozen of clothes in the first half.

“I will have the fastest costume change in the musical, shifting from casual to gown within 15-20 seconds,” said Carole Stennett who plays Rachel. “There are tricks to achieve that, but I cannot tell.”
