Three pianists play classics and jazz in French program

THREE concert pianists will give recitals from May 26 to 28 as part of the ninth Piano aux Jacobins Festival at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.

The festival selects three pianists each year from various classical, contemporary and jazz fields.

Anne-Marie McDermott from the United States will play five sonatas by Haydn, including No. 54, 33, 38, 60 and 62. She made her Carnegie Hall debut at the age of 12 and has played recitals, concertos has recorded the complete works of Prokofiev and Gershwin in her career of more than 25 years.

French pianist Bertrand Chamayou will perform works by Schubert and Liszt, including "Wanderer-Fantaisie," "Dante Sonata" and "The Fountain of the Villa d'Este." The 32-year-old musician performs frequently at music festivals and has performed with the Orchestre de Paris, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and other orchestras. In 2011 he recorded the complete "Years of Pilgrimage" to mark Liszt's 200th anniversary; it received a Gramophone's Choice award.

Jazz pianist Yaron Herman from Israel wanted to be a basketball player but his career was cut short by injury. He started to play piano at the age of 16, much later than most professional musicians. In 2005 he recorded his first piano solo album. He was the first jazz pianist to play in the Forbidden City in Beijing.

This year, the Piano aux Jacobins is touring three other cities, Beijing, Wuhan and Guangzhou.
