Tibetan 'Lotus' dancers to stage

A Tibetan modern dance "Shambhala," meaning a mystical Buddhist kingdom, will be staged on March 24 at Daning Theater.

The original performance by Wanma Dance Theater was staged last month in New York and Chicago, after it premiered at the National Center for Performing Arts in Beijing last August.

The young company, which is mostly Tibetan, combines traditional Tibetan and Chinese dance elements with modern, international dance aesthetics. "Shambhala" is its first major production.

In Tibetan Buddhism, "Shambhala" is the pure land, the ideal mystical kingdom that people long for.

The production addresses life, death and reincarnation of all creatures, great and small, and presents the powerful visual impact of colors as well as the simplicity of human body lines.

The performance includes modern dance, country dance, traditional Tibetan dance and other dance forms. Live music is performed on the Tibetan eagle flute.

In the Tibetan language, wanma means lotus, a symbol of purity, nobility and rebirth.

Company director Wanma Jiancuo says he wanted to express his understanding of Tibetan culture on stage and share his feelings. The company will go on a national tour this year.
