Two versions of beloved play hit local stage

“SECRET Love in Peach Blos-som Land” is considered a masterpiece of Taiwanese playwright and director Stan Lai.

Since its debut in Taiwan in 1986, many theater and film stars including Brigitte Lin, chin Shih-Chieh, Huang Lei have performed in different productions.

Two versions of the play will be staged again later this month in Shanghai at theater Above, the local theater used by Lai and his Performance Workshop.

These will include an “exclusive” version presented by a cast of rising stars, as well as a version commemorating the play’s 30th anniversary.

Two troupes of actors

The play focuses on two troupes of actors that collide on stage when they accidentally book the same theater for rehearsals.

Amid the chaos, squabbles and comical jabs at theater life, their two plays begin to mysteriously intertwine, their epic themes calling to each other across the centuries in a blend of modern realism and Peking opera.

In the exclusive version, the main role of Jiang will be played by Yan Nan, an accomplished stage actor who graduated from the central Academy of Drama.

Yan appeared as Konstantin in chekhov’s “the Seagull” directed by Lai, and as Wang Debao in Lai’s eight-hour stage epic “A Dream Like A two versions of beloved play hit local stage Dream.” He has also worked as assistant director on “Winter Journey” directed by Lai.

Yan’s talents and efforts have also been praised by both director Lai and chin Shih-Chieh who was the first Jiang in the original 1986 production.

“I am very looking forward to the performance of this young guy (Yan). He has been so absorbed in this role,” says chin.

The show has been performed for more than three decades, but core elements of this story about humanity and destiny amid the currents of history will never be out-of-date, according to Lai.

Although the new version is presented by a group of young actors, many of whom are younger than the play itself, Lai believes that each generation has a different chemistry with the show.

This new version is also intended to serve as the exclusive “Shanghai version” for the iconic local play when it is performed at theater Above.
