'Wizard' out to weave magic

GRAMMY winner "Wizard" Jason Mraz is planning a magical show in Shanghai next week - his first concert in the city.

The performance at Shanghai Grand Stage on June 14 is part of Mraz's world tour - "Tour Is a Four Letter Word" - celebrating his new album "Love is a Four Letter Word." Beijing and Shanghai are the only two stops on the Chinese mainland. Mraz promises fans that he will perform his hits, though saying he might also try out new material.

"I always like to test new songs on tour," says Mraz. "I haven't decided which songs to test yet. We'll see. But definitely, I'll play some of the hits like 'I'm Yours' and 'Lucky'."

Since this is Mraz's first visit to Shanghai, he is unsure what to expect, but is ready to be surprised by the city and the audience here.

Starting as a coffee shop singer, where he picked up his Wizard nickname, Mraz brings his own magic to live performances, in most cases just with his guitar and voice.

"I sing from the heart and just think about what will work in a live show," he says.

Mraz released his first major-label album "Waiting for My Rocket to Come" in 2002, and got platinum quickly by his pure voice and great creativity. His pop hit "I Am Yours" from the third album "We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things" in 2008 gained him world popularity with a record of keeping on Billboard Hot 100 for 76 weeks. In 2010, he was awarded the Best Male Singer for the 52nd Grammy Awards.

"I came from a small town (Mechanicsville, Virginia), where we had great public schools. We had great music teachers, great drama teachers, great communication department, great arts department in general, visual art, photography, and so I felt always supported and nurtured in the arts so that as - by the time I graduated, I knew I could go out into the world and do something in the arts," says Mraz. "And you know, with that was always this yearning."

For every album, he immerses himself in a different type of genre so that he can pick up a few new ideas, styles and patterns. Mraz says his life provides him with the inspiration for his creations.

"I always write to understand my place in the world. I can see myself, my life, unfold on the page, and I can understand my strengths, my weaknesses. I can see where I need to step up a bit. I can see where I need to forgive myself or forgive others," says Mraz.

And he is ready to collect some new inspiration on his Asia tour, though fans may have to wait a while to hear the results.

"The new album will come when I feel like it," says Mraz.
