Yanni gets low-price tickets for fans
GREEK pianist, composer and music producer Yanni delivers more than energized New Age and world music - he combines electronic elements, contemporary classical, jazz, ethnic and other forms.
Yanni, born Yiannis Hrysomallis, will stage an affordable-ticket concert on April 26 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena as part of a seven-city China tour. Shanghai is his first stop.
Yanni, born in 1954, will present a collision of modern and classical in Shanghai and stage masterpieces such as "Nightingale," "Santorini" and "Vertigo." His sound has influenced other musicians such as Enya and Secret Garden.
Creating emotional communication among people is the major aim of his music, says Yanni, who received Grammy nominations in 1992 for his album "Dare to Dream" and the 1993 album "In My Time."
His music is often inspired by stories from various cultures.
His song "Nightingale," considered one of his masterpieces, is based on a Chinese legend in which a kind emperor turns into a nightingale singing for his failed love and lost empire.
Yanni was one of the earliest Western musicians to perform in China. During this year's CCTV Spring Festival Gala he cooperated with guzheng (Chinese zither) artist Chang Jing.
His last public concert in China was staged two years ago in Shanghai.
Moved by the enthusiasm of students two years ago, Yanni negotiated this time with the host to provide affordable tickets this time. The lowest price is 200 yuan (US$32).
