Also at Dongtan Wetland Park

• Bird watching

Every year, hundreds of thousands of migratory birds, some very rare, spend the winter at the park. You can meet egrets, cranes, night heron, snipe, moorhen, kingfishers, grackle and wagtails. You might spot moorhen walking on the duckweed and a wagtail might just fly over your head.

• Star gazing

Chongming Island is the best place in Shanghai to see stars at night since there’s less light pollution. You can see the Milky Way clearly and countless stars on warm summer nights. You may also see the annual Perseid Meteor Shower in August, though the peak has passed.

If you are a beginner, take an electronic tablet along and download a star-gazing application to learn names and locations of constellations and stars.

• Plants and insects

The wetland park is filled with flora and fauna, including many insects.
