'Ambassador of watercolor'

TAIWANESE watercolorist Chen Yangchun fuses techniques of traditional ink-wash painting and oil on canvas to produce works that are poetic and dreamy.

Known as the "ambassador of watercolor," Taiwan-based Chen is holding a solo exhibition titled "Love and Beauty" at the Liu Haisu Art Museum through next Tuesday.

His subjects are wide-ranging, from religion to daily life, including a small harbor in Taiwan and a fishing village in Malaysia.

Chen, who has been painting in watercolor for five decades, says he is considering opening a studio in Shanghai, noting there are many old residences of celebrities and scenic suburban water towns that make ideal subjects.

"Now I am considering of opening a studio in Shanghai, as there are so many former residences of celebrities and the canal towns in the suburbs, which are a perfect theme for watercolor paintings," says the artist.

Chen has exhibited and lectured widely around the world. Six years ago he established the Huayang Award to encourage young watercolor painters.
