Bird and Fish

A SOLO exhibition featuring watercolors, videos, photographs, drawings and oil painting by Chinese artist Kristin Ng-Yang is on display starting today at Noeli Gallery.
The pieces are inspired by a Chinese song in which a bird falls in love with a fish.
The suspended fish/birds painted on plexiglass elude to the ephemeral encounter and the impossibilities in life.
Ng-Yang graduated from Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1991. She has lived in South Africa for over 17 years and is now completing a practice-led PhD degree at the Centre for Visual Art, University of KwaZulu-Natal.
In South Africa, her Chinese identity and culture set her apart from other artists in the country.
Her works reflect on life’s journey into inevitable oblivion as well as being confronted with choices which are subject to fate.
Ng-Yang’s video creations contain music and live performance with accompaniment by the guzheng (Chinese zither) and African Djembe drum in collision and fusion that is both strange and yet familiar.
This combination conveys a strong sense of other-worldliness and a meditation on sounds that shift between the realms and vibrations of both birds and fish.
