Cavalia trots and twirls its way into town

THE highly acclaimed Cavalia opens in Shanghai tonight. Promising a galloping good time, Cavalia is a blend of equestrianism and performing arts like acrobatics.

“There is no other show like this in the world — that’s why we have had such success so far,” says Normand Latourelle, who founded Cavalier in 2003 and remains its artistic director. “People in Shanghai are also going to see the amazement, see how beautiful the animals are.”

Latourelle is renowned for his adventurous productions and is also one of the pioneers behind Cirque du Soleil.

Cavalia, which features 40 horses, takes place at the White Theatre Tent next to China Art Museum. Not to be overshadowed by the horses, 40 riders, aerialists, acrobats, dancers and musicians from around the world will be a major part of the show.

“Cavalia is the biggest touring show in the world, including the logistics and performing arts,” Latourelle says. “That’s a big challenge to bring such a big show from Canada to Shanghai. We are traveling with 100 containers of equipment. With 200 people working with me, and a talented local promoter, we finally made it possible.

“We are very proud of our horses, also the way we treat them. One of the key things to the success of Cavalia is ‘leave the horse, stay the horse,’ even though we have acrobatics flying, incredible music and 40 artists,” Latourelle adds.

The show features 11 breeds including Spanish purebred, Percheron, Arabian, Lusitano, Warmblood and Quarter Horse. The animals are accompanied by a dedicated team of equine specialists.

No exact date has been set for the final show, but Cavalia is expected to run until October.
