Ceramics feature comely women and urban crowds

An exhibition of painted ceramics titled “Chinese Phonetics” is underway, featuring the works of eight artists.

Abstract and realistic works are presented at Hua Fu Art gallery by Wu Fang, Chen Fan, Nan Fang, Lu Yun, He Zhenhua, Li Xihua, Sun Yuan and Wan Qiong. Many reflect contemporary art concepts, such as urban crowds.

Wu Fang is fascinated by experimenting with different effects created by firing in a kiln, and many works appear abstract, with random, flowing colors.

“If you take a closer look at other paintings, you see traces of subjects such as nature and the development of mankind,” she said. “Of course, they are in an obscure art language.

“Before the ceramics come out of the kiln, I am not sure what kind of colors will finally appear due to the magical changes in the kiln.”

Chen Fan depicts beautiful women.

“Lust and desire are everywhere in our society. I just present them in front of you,” he said. “No man can resist the temptation of female beauty, so why should I deny it?”

The female figures are more vivid yet distant on ceramics than rice paper, he said, comparing them to “material girls” today.

Many paintings on ceramic are quite urban and contemporary. For example, Sun Yuan’s “Memory Loss” depicts a cluster of small pedestrians at rush hour.
