Choreographer leads ballet contest opener
ACCLAIMED German choreographer and dancer Patrick de Bana has returned to Shanghai to direct the opening gala of the 5th Shanghai International Ballet Competition.
The competition — scheduled for August 3-4 at Shanghai Grand Theater — is returning after a nine-year hiatus with an opening gala presented in partnership with Shanghai Ballet.
The show will feature 14 internationally renowned ballet dancers from six countries, including Vienna State Ballet Director Manuel Legris, principal dancer of Mariinsky Ballet Vladimir Shklyarov, principal dancer of Paris Opera Ballet Ludmila Pagliero, former principal dancer of Paris Opera Ballet Isabelle Guérin as well as Shanghai Ballet’s first principal dancer Wu Husheng.
“I’m very happy to be here, and I wanted the Chinese audience to see a united ballet gala performance,” de Bana says.
Titled “Memories of a Kiss,” de Bana has put together an extensive program consisting of both classical and contemporary ballet works.
In addition to selections from classical ballets like “Le Corsaire” and “Don Quixote,” six of de Bana’s works including “Ludwig II — The Swan King,” “The Farewell Waltz,” “Factum” and “I Have Been Kissed by You” will be performed by himself and dancers from leading ballet companies.
Wu will be dancing in the theatrical piece “Ludwig II — The Swan King” with Vienna State Ballet ballerinas Nina Poláková and Maria Yakovleva. This work tells the story of Ludwig II, king of Bavaria and one of the most enigmatic figures of the 19th century. The ballet is about beauty, love and madness, explains the choreographer.
The gala will close with “The Rite of Spring,” starring Vera Sabantseva with Russia’s Novosibirsk State Opera and Ballet Theater and Zhang Wenjun from Shanghai Ballet.
De Bana has previously choreographed two original ballet productions for Shanghai Ballet — “Jane Eyre” in 2012 and “Song of Everlasting Sorrow” in 2015.
