Classics to cross-over fill the summer air
LOW-COST, outdoor music for all tastes - classics, country, pop, jazz - will fill the air on both sides of the Huangpu River from July 29 to August 12.
Tickets will cost 30-380 yuan (US$4.71-US$59.7).
The 3rd Music in the Summer Air (MISA) festival will be staged at Lujiazui Central Greenland in the Pudong New Area, Waitanyuan area (around the former Union Church) on the Bund side and at Shanghai Culture Square where it was staged last year.
The program will feature around 35 concerts by two resident orchestras, three symphony orchestras, four choirs, eight ensemble orchestras, nine conductors and 23 soloists.
Instead of mostly classical music as in previous years, this year's MISA will include movie music, pop, country music, jazz and various cross-over works. It is said that cross-over will be around half of the program.
MISA originally aimed to provide easy access to classical music, according to Chen Guangxian, chairman of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, which initiated the festival. But based on audience surveys over the past two years, most people who have never attended a classical concert would still prefer popular works.
"We want the festival to become a bridge linking musicians and ordinary residents, so we should attract them in the first place, before introducing more classical works," Chen says. That's why many cross-over works will be featured this year.
"Still, most of the pop works to be staged this time will be presented in a classical way," Chen says.
The Britain Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will present a concert featuring Beatles' songs. Works by the late Taiwanese legend Teresa Teng will be presented by the Southern Taiwan Pops Orchestra, and the popular British quartet Blake will cooperate with the C.S.G String Ensemble, an ensemble of women string musicians from Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou.
It will be Blake's first concert in Shanghai and members say they are looking forward to cooperating with the 25 female Chinese string musicians.
Lovers of classical music can attend concerts by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Charles Dutoit and Russia's State Hermitage Orchestra cooperating with cellist Natalia Gutman.
A series of movie music concerts will feature works such as "The Lord of the Rings," the BBC documentary "The Blue Planet" and songs from classic Russian movies.
MISA carries on the tradition of outdoor performances in a relaxed atmosphere. A temporary 1,000-seat pavilion concert hall will be set up at Lujiazui Greenland on July 29. It will have speakers designed for classical music, as well as installations to reduce heat and noise.
The former Union Church at the Waitanyuan will feature outdoor concerts and Shanghai Culture Square will feature ensemble concerts.
"We want to present the idea that classical music is not always that hard to get," Chen says. "You can get access with the cost of a cup of coffee."
