DJ Morita to spin at Ark

TOP Japanese DJ Masanori Morita will be at Ark Restaurant & Lounge Bar tonight.

He is among a batch of Japanese DJs performing in the popular watering hole since April when famous Japanese musician Kazuo "Deka" Nishino worked as its music director.

Based in Tokyo, Morita has been a DJ for the past 10 years and today is widely regarded as one of the most exciting house DJs in Japan.

"In Tokyo the most popular music in today's night clubs is house, which is a style of electronic dance music originally from Chicago in the United States," says Deka.

Developed from dance music and infused with hip-hop, funk and soul, house has become infused in mainstream pop and dance music worldwide.

"It's one of the best music styles," says Deka. "It can show the flexibility, freedom and emotion of music. It's also my favorite music."

He also predicts house will be the next hit style in Shanghai after hip-hop and electronic music.

Morita is expected to bring the house down in Shanghai with his personal style.

The music he plays covers a wide range. He has performed around the world including the US, United Kingdom and the Netherlands. At the same time, he is a famous music producer for many pop stars like Crystal KayMisia and Def Tech in Japan.

He has written songs for Daishi Dance, Pax Japonica Groove and Hideo Kobayashi, Timmy Regisford, Dennis Ferrer, Kerri Chandler and Tiger Stripes.

Morita became a member of Studio Apartment in 2000. Before then he had recorded four albums.

Studio Apartment is the acclaimed house outfit with Noboru Abe on keyboards. It has worked closely with artists such as Blaze, V, Monique Bingham, Joi Cardwell, Stephanie Cooke, Terrence Downs, Ron Carroll, Kimara Lovelace and Kenny Bobien.

Their soulful house production brings tribal grooves to the dance floor, and Studio Apartment has built up a reputation as one of the finest deep house producers in Japanese dance music today.

When Morita's work showed up on the UK label Defected he let the whole world know that Japan and Studio Apartment had some fresh ideas on house music.

In 2008, Studio Apartment released the album "The Rising Sun" on the King Street label of which the song "I'm In Love" won the Best Deep House 2008 award on Beatport.
