Event brings design to everyday life
SHANGHAI Design Week 2016 runs August 26-29 at the Shanghai Exhibition Center and other venues around the city.
The 13,000-square-meter exhibition center will display home decorations, artificial intelligence and robotics appliances, 3D printing technology, and arts works made from obsolete film. It will also showcase products and handicrafts exposing various ethnic characteristics from home and abroad.
Unlike past design weeks, works to be exhibited this year will not be presented in separate booths. Instead, they will be categorized by theme and concept, thus enabling participants to experience and interact with works rather than appreciating exhibits one after another, according to He Jiong, the deputy director of the Shanghai Design Week Committee. He is responsible for organizing all the event’s activities.
“People nowadays aren’t consuming just based on a product’s function; they are seeking what entertains and satisfies them,” He said. “Designers should really understand consumers’ preferences and combine industry with people’s daily lives.”
In accordance with this idea, organizers intend to extend the reach and timing of this exhibition with design shows and activities happening throughout the coming year at venues around the city.
“We hope the fruits of design can be shared with citizens every day and everywhere, not just during these four days,” He said. “Consumers then can grasp a deeper understanding of design via a mass of interactive experiences.”
Artificial intelligence and 3D printing are highlighted in the design week, and support the idea of man-machine interaction. According to He, participants can “shuttle though reality and a magic world” and print models based on their own shapes and then customize them.
Three-dimension printing will also be used in a café where food and decorations are made by this technology. At the exhibition’s center, He said there will be a store in Jing’an District exhibiting this application of 3D printing throughout the year.
“Design should be combined with technology and infused into diverse industries. Only via such industrial integration can we give full play to design in economic development,” He said.
Eco-friendliness and sustainability are other highlights of this exhibition.
The event has also attracted Jackie Chan, who has organized designers across the world to create pieces using obsolete items used in films and TV shows. This is just one example of waste reclamation and recycling displays that will be found throughout the event.
