Exhibition brings Sun Yat-sen鈥檚 legacy alive
A special photo exhibition underway at the China Financial Information Center in Shanghai’s Pudong New Area commemorates the 150th birth anniversary of Sun Yat-sen, the forerunner of democratic revolution in China.
More than 165 photographs, developed and enlarged from the original collection of the Dr Sun Yat-sen and Soong Ching Ling Relics Management Committee, are on display at the exhibition titled “Sun Yat-sen’s Ideals and Efforts” that also celebrates Sun’s achievements.
Among the pictures, 14 are exhibited to the public for the first time.
Dr Sun was born in 1866 in south China’s Guangdong Province. He was educated in Hawaii and Hong Kong and is recognized as one of the greatest leaders of modern China.
Sun lived a life of constant struggles and frequent exiles as he fought for the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), eventually setting up the Republic of China in 1912.
His chief legacy known as the “Sanmin Doctrine” (Three Principles of the People) — nationalism, democracy and the people’s livelihood — was recognized and admired by both the locals and the global community.
The photo exhibition is one of a series of events being held in Shanghai “to honor his contribution to national independence, social advancement and people’s happiness; to carry forward his patriotic thoughts and revolutionary ideals and entrepreneurial spirits,” said Gao Xiaomei, vice chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Shanghai Committee at the opening of the photo exhibition.
“A deep understanding of Dr Sun Yat-sen’s legacy gives us the historical meaning and rich connotation of the Chinese Dream, put forth by President Xi Jinping. It also builds confidence in China’s rejuvenation and peaceful reunification of the Chinese mainland and Taiwan,” Gao said.
Highlights of the exhibition include a letter written by Soong Yao-ju, Madam Soong Ching Ling’s father, to Dr Sun in 1912. In the letter, the father-in-law, in addition to showing his support to the newly established republic government on behalf of the missionary communities in China, installed his first daughter Soong Ai-ling as Sun’s secretary, in charge of handling his correspondence.
There is also a calendar that marks the first year of the Republic of China as well as the election of Sun as the provisional president in January 1912; a copy of Soong’s residence in Shanghai at 491 Baochang Road, where Sun stayed temporarily after his resignation from the provisional presidency of the Republic of China in April 1912; and a picture of Sun meeting with Captain Maksimov on the former Soviet warship Voyovskii, which transported weapons needed for the Northern Expedition against the regional warlords. The two met in Whampoa in Guangdong in October 1924.
The picture is historic. It was the first time that the Kuomintang and Communist Party cooperated for the cause of the Chinese revolution.
“We haven’t succeeded in the revolution yet, so our comrades should still work hard,” Dr Sun said just before he passed away in 1925.
The exhibition is co-organized by the Shanghai Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, the Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling and the Soong Ching Ling Memorial Park.
