Fairy tale castles and forts of Czech history
THE Czech Republic is famous for its many well-preserved castles — some seemingly out of fairy tales — its graceful manors and formidable fortifications, some dating from the Middle Ages.
An exhibition of models and photographs of spectacular Czech castles and fortifications is underway through November 16 at Tongji University.
The exhibition of more than 50 models and photos explains the history and stories behind some of the country’s most famous architecture.
It includes Pernstejn Castle, which was never captured; Vranov Nad Dyji Castle, and Hluboka, a national cultural monument.
Like many Czech castles, Pernstejn has its own ghost, the mysterious White Lady who used to be a chambermaid.
Hlubloka castle is a white confection of intricate brickwork, battlements, towers, oriels, fairy tale spires and elaborate windows.
Forts in the exhibition include the military pillbox in South Bohemia and the Trebon Town fortification.
