Famed Yueju Opera artist to perform

WELL-KNOWN Yueju Opera artist Zheng Guofeng, famous for her depiction of Jia Baoyu in “A Dream of Red Mansions,” will stage a Yueju Opera concert of classic excerpts.

Zheng, 48, will present local fans her new interpretation of classic episodes from “The Story of the Western Wing” and “King of Beidi,” with which she won the 26th Plum Blossom Prize — the highest theatrical award in China — last year.

She will also cooperate with veteran performer Wang Zhiping on an excerpt of “Legend of Chunxiang.”

“The concert will be a big challenge to my voice and physical stamina,” Zheng says, adding that she will present at least two famous Yueju Opera crying scenes.

As a successor of the Xu singing school of Yueju Opera, Zheng is famous for her magnificent and unrestrained singing, representing a soulful spirit.

Yueju Opera, which originated in Zhejiang Province, is a gentle, melodic and feminine opera that tells mostly romantic stories.
