Folk singers unite to help a friend
A charity concert named "Folk Song Ambulance" will be staged tonight from 8pm at Kento's Live House. It will continue until 7am tomorrow. Renowned Chinese modern folk singers such as Zhou Yunpeng will perform to help raise money for folk singer Tong Yan, who has leukemia and needs money for treatment.
Other performers include Wu Tun, Zhang Weiwei, Guo Long and band Top Floor Circus.
Tong is considered a rare talent in the folk music industry and is known for her album "The Southland."
She has also collaborated with other famous folk singers - she worked with Zhou on his album "Fried Bitter Cucumber with Plain" and with Zhong Lifeng for the album "Crazy Fruits." However, Tong was diagnosed with acute leukemia in 2009, which made her step back from music so she could focus on getting better.
Singer Zhou started calling for a charity concert to save Tong's life in 2010. Several concerts were held in several cities and they raised several hundred thousand yuan for her bone marrow transplant.
Yet Tong's immune system weakened and she developed diabetes after the transplant, aggravating the situation. More charity concerts were held in June to cover her latest medical expenses.
"Folk musicians like us cannot afford such diseases as we don't have stable earnings. I hope that we can provide our help continuously rather than just for one shot," organizer Zhou says.
Zhou is a blind folk song singer famous for ironic lyrics that attack social problems. His song "Chinese Children," released in 2007, aroused a heated discussion on Internet forums and contributed to his fame.
