From Sufi chants to alphorn jazz
QAWWALI Sufi music from Pakistan, African blues from Reunion, Gypsy street music from France and jazz played on the multi-foot-long alphorn are among the World Music vibes filling the air in a concert series starting in late April.
The 2012 World Music Shanghai runs from April 28 to May 5th, with free performances on four outdoor stages at including Red Town, Xintiandi, Jinqiao's Life Hub, Life Hub @Anting and Xuhui Green Field.
Two groups from China (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region) and seven from other countries will perform vibrant, ethnic music.
"Audiences don't need to know specifics about these groups or their music; the infectious energy of the live performance will make everybody high," says Lin Jian, creative director of the festival.
The rhythms of Rajasthan, India, are a far cry from Bollywood, and the performance involves percussion and elements of mystical Indian snake charmers.
From Pakistan, Asfi Ali Khan and Party will perform traditional Qawwali Sufi music. Their core member, Asif Ali Khan, who was once praised by Pakistan's Qawwali maestro as one of his best students, has emerged as the reigning prince of Qawwali. "To hear his voice soaring above the call-and-response choruses, rhythmic hand claps, percussion and harmonium of his accompanying musicians is an inspiring experience, whether you are an adherent of the Sufi faith or not," says Lin.
Folk artists of Soul of Dolan from Xinjiang will perform Dolan Muqam, a traditional hybrid of music and poetry that has been transmitted orally for centuries in Makit County of the autonomous region.
The ensemble creates a trance-like atmosphere with a chorus and the use of traditional instruments, such as drums, qalun dulcimer, dolan rawap (a plucked instrument) and the dolan ghijak (a vertically-held fiddle).
Other performers include the Ziveli Orkestra from France bringing Gypsy street music; Tiloun from French Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, featuring African-style blues; Windbone from Switzerland, which plays jazz on the traditional long alphorn; Camino Flamenco with members from China and Spain; Yemen Blues from Israel, and Haya from China's Inner Mongolia will also perform.
