Horses grand and small reign in holiday art show
A hollow, 7-meter-high horse, modeled on the iconic Han horse, is filled with 200 gold and silver fortune balls.
The horse installation created with modern technology by Qiu Jia is the centerpiece of a Year of the Horse exhibition at the Xintiandi shopping hub.
The horse is surrounded by 12 other fortune balls, in auspicious colors and bearing auspicious characters and Buddhist symbols.
Artist Kebeyo (Chen Li) exhibits paintings, sculptures and installations in a cartoon style, all featuring the horse. Some of her horses are surrounded by tiny, innocent creatures from a fairy tale.
The Door God exhibition is on display with the designer brand Exception.
Door God refers to the Chinese Spring Festival tradition of writing and drawing auspicious verse and pictures on a wooden door. New Year’s couplets and traditional pictures are also exhibited.
A lecture on Han literature and Door God pictures and writing will be delivered by Huang Yuangsung, a well-known Taiwan publisher who and his friends launched the Echo magazine approximately 40 years ago to promote Chinese traditional food, clothing, homes and modes of travel.
