In Azabache dance class, emotions are the key

FROM only one student and no fixed venue to a dance studio in Shanghai’s Xintiandi with more than 60 members, Sun Zigang has come a long way and carved out a different path as a dancer when he founded the Azabache Dance Studio in 2010.

Graduating in ballet from Shanghai Theater Academy in 2008, Sun started his journey of having a space of his own to create and share new works with everybody after he participated in various performances and projects, commercial or artistic, to gain experiences.

He has collaborated with Shanghai Museum of Modern Art and created a piece called “Black and White.” Cooperating with fashion brand Stella McCartney, he has also danced with artist Tan Yuanyuan for the piece “Night Shanghai.”

Having tried different roles and different fields, Sun founded the Azabache Dance Studio in 2010. Azabache means “black gem on the stage.”

The dance studio offers three types of classes including pilates, modern dance and ballet. Members are assigned to different sessions based on their levels. Instead of the traditional teaching method, Azabache focuses on emotion expression and body art.

The pilates, taught by Sun, is different from the traditional fitness discipline, as he incorporated elements of ballet into it. His class looks for grace and poise in body movements while develops the physical strength and flexibility.

The ballet class is more contemporary than many other studios that focus on classical programs. The Azabache’s class is customized for beginners, and members rehearse contemporary choreographies in addition to basic ballet training.

Sun wants to teach the students how to express emotions through their body, how to perform instead of just doing the elements.

For modern dance, Azabache Dance Studio focuses not only on teaching dance techniques and skills, but also on developing inner body expression and body art. Members will enjoy learning a wide range of dance movements while challenging their potentials. Tailor-made courses can further enable members to develop skills to their limits.

In 2014, Sun and students of his studio presented a modern dance show at Daning Theatre, a chance to perform in front of a large audience. In future, Azabache will continue to host lectures regularly, providing students with opportunities to perform and create original choreographies, feel more about the music and interpret the music.

“We all come from different worlds and cultures, Azabache brings you at the crossroads of artistic expression. Everybody will become the black gem on the stage.” Sun says.
