Ink-wash masterpieces to be auctioned

A cluster of ancient and modern Chinese ink-wash paintings and calligraphy will go under hammer at Poly Auction House from June 1 to 8 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beijing. A preview of some of the highlights will be in Shanghai May 12 and 13.

The spotlight of the ancient masterpieces is a piece of artwork created by Chen Hongshou (1598-1652), a Chinese painter of the late Ming Dynasty.

Chen was born in Zhuji, Zhejiang Province. He was skilled in painting peculiar human figures, landscapes, flowers and birds. He utilized plump, profound brushwork and precise color, rendering a unique style. He painted illustrations and made tapestry portraits. He was famous during his time, and people referred to “Chen in South and Cui in North,” pairing him with Cui Zizhong (1574-1644), another Chinese master during Chen’s time.

Chen’s piece titled “Flower and Bird Album” has a clear provenance, previously collected by renowned 20th-century Chinese artists such as Lai Shaoqi, Xie Zhiliu and Tang Yun.

Another eye-catching work among Chinese modern ink-wash paintings at the auction will be the splash-ink-wash painting created by Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) in 1969, the peak time in the master’s career path.

Zhang was one of the best-known and most prodigious Chinese artists of the 20th century. Originally a traditional painter, by the 1960s he was also renowned as a modern impressionist and expressionist painter. Due to the political climate of China in 1949, Zhang left the the mainland and resided in various places such as Mendoza, Sao Paulo and California. He died in Taipei in 1983.

A meeting between Zhang and Picasso in Nice, France in 1956 was viewed as a summit between the preeminent masters of Eastern and Western art.
