Italy and China in tune with times

TRAVELING music festival Hit Week, dedicated to showcasing modern Italian music and culture, arrives in China this month, where ground-breaking superstar acts from Italy will join force with China's finest to challenge preconceptions about both countries' musical output.

International electro-rock pioneer Subsonica, hard rock giant Negrita and indie phenomenon La Fame di Camilla, clash with Chinese southern folk-rockers Shanren and indie legend Zhou Yunshan for two nights in Beijing at the end of this month, and two nights in Shanghai at Mao Livehouse in June.

La Fame de Camilla, Shanren and Subsonica will appear on June 3, with Zhou Yunshan, Negrita and La Fame di Camilla on the bill the following day.

The Hit Week concept was born in 2007, out of the conviction that there is space for Italian music beyond the stereotypes of pizza, mandolin and operetta.

"The goal of Hit Week is to change outdated preconceptions about modern Italian culture - to convey to the world the present and the future of Italian music, together with real Italian creative lifestyle, art, cinema, design, food and beverage trends," says Sam Debell, international market manager of Beijing Jade Bird Music Corporation, co-organizer of the festival in China.

Last year, the organizers of Hit Week attended the China Sounds event at the Shenzhen Cultural Industries Fair in Guangdong Province, which sought to offer an insight into Chinese music and culture. From there, the concept of Hit Week China was quickly born.

"For Hit Week China 2012, an elite cast of Italian and Chinese performers has been scheduled," says Debell.

Electro-rockers Subsonica head the bill.

After the success of their latest album, which topped the Italian album charts last year, Subsonica have been packing arenas all over Europe, so their first-ever trip to China should be a real spectacle.

Negrita is one of Italy's most established rock bands and best-selling live act so far this year. Active since the late nineties, it has released more than 10 albums.

Completing the Italian side of the lineup are indie breakthrough stars La Fame di Camilla.

China is represented by Yunnan folk-rock phenomenon Shanren, renowned for being among the country's most dynamic and original live performers.

"Fresh from our US and Canadian spring tour, and having played music festivals on three continents in the past year, we are ready to share a stage with Europe's finest," says Ou Jianyun, percussionist and band leader.

For the second Shanghai show, Zhou Yunshan is playing. Heralded as one of China's finest rock musicians for his haunting vocals and carefully woven melodies, Zhou has been rocking the biggest Chinese music festivals since their emergence 10 years ago.

"The combined result of this audio onslaught - apart from four stupendous nights of live music in Beijing and Shanghai - will be a fresh cultural impression of two countries which are both, in their own way, struggling to break free from the shackles of their magnificent pasts," Debell adds.
