Lantern show dazzles at Yuyuan

SPECTACULAR glittering lanterns of horses, dragons, animals and pavilions are featured in the 20th Yuyuan Garden Lantern Festival show.

Through February 17, the classical old garden will be filled every night with giant lanterns of all kinds and jammed with families and wide-eyed children.

To celebrate the lunar Year of the Horse, the garden with its famous nine zigzag bridge will be open from 5:30pm to 10pm nightly.

Lantern riddles will also be featured at the festival, listed as part of China’s intangible cultural heritage in 2010.

The lantern highlight is a giant golden horse that is running with a dragon.

Together they represent the phrase long ma jing shen (dragon and horse spirit), meaning the vigor and spirit of a dragon and horse.

In addition to carrying lanterns, watching shows and guessing 1,000 lantern riddles, visitors can eat yuanxiao sweet dumplings, buns and other snacks.

The Lantern Festival on February 14 this year marks the end of Spring Festival.
