Meet the new faces of art

A NEW generation of Shanghai artists is determined to make its mark with a splash of creative approaches to modern and traditional styles.
Working in a range of media and genres, their styles include everything from the traditional to the realistic, contemporary abstract to expressionist.
Several of the artists, who are either based in or hail from Shanghai, have studied abroad and are keen to explore new possibilities in the use of old media, such as glass, rice paper and plaster.
Some pursue the essence of traditional Chinese art in a bid to revive its beauty, while others address a changing society and the language of the city that inspires them.
While the artists are gaining a certain degree of attention for their art, most have yet to make any commercial impact. What sustains them is their passion.
In the first of a new series of quarterly art specials, Shanghai Daily selects six of these upcoming artists and presents their stories. Hu Jianjun, Zhao Zhengrong, Li Chuhui, Wang Yuhong, Zhou Yang and Wang Qin might not be familiar names today, but keep an eye on them, their ideas and techniques set them apart from their contemporaries.
The quarterly specials will be dedicated to the art scene around the world and especially in China.
Future editions will feature such topics Jinshan “farmers’ paintings,” the so-called peasant Picassos; French artists in Shanghai, the crossovers between art and fashion, and the changing art market.
