Midi and Strawberry festivals rock
MUSIC will fill the air as two outdoor music festivals take the stage this month. The rock Midi Music Festival will highlight environmental issues when it opens on April 21 and 22 in Shanghai while the Strawberry Music Festival will run from April 29 through May 1.
The 15th Midi Festival, the earliest international outdoor rock festivals in China, will open in Century Park in its first China stop this year, and the Strawberry Music Festival featuring relatively more pop and soft music will make its first-ever appearance in Shanghai at the same venue.
Environmental awareness is part of the Midi Festival, which emphasizes issues such as PM2.5, the particulate matter that is particularly dangerous. The festival includes interactive events about environmental issues.
The festival will feature 18 rock performances on the Tang Stage and 14 electronic music shows on the Yuan Stage in the park. International musicians like Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg (US), LSD (France), Kandiate (Denmark) and Scarred by Beauty (Denmark) will take the stage, as will Chinese rockers such as Miserable Faith, Wang Yong CIS and Muma and Third Party.
"As always, a feast of hard rock music is the tradition for the Midi Festival; but we also take the local audience's interests into consideration while preparing the programs," says Maggie Wang, media director for the festival.
She says the electronic music is expected to be quite a draw, so the Yuan Stage was set up especially for that vibe.
Programs for Shanghai, Beijing and Zhenjiang in Jiangsu Province, the festival's two other stops, will be different from each other.
The performance by Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg will be a highlight. Though the band is new, it has two musicians from two of the most famous rock bands - Michael Graves from the Misfits and Marky Ramone from the Ramones.
Ramone is the only living member of the longest-running Ramones (15 years), considered by many to be the originator of punk music. Ramones classics will be performed.
Strawberry festival
For the Strawberry Music Festival, around 80 musical groups will stage, including local Shanghai, Chinese and overseas musicians.
Four stages will be set up in Century Park - Strawberry Stage, Love Stage, Electronic Music Stage and Campus Stage for various types of music.
International performers such as Blonde Redhead (US), Laura Jansen (US), Zammo (UK) and Strip Steve (France) will take part, as will Chinese bands such as New Trousers, Twisting Machines and Second-hand Rose.
Sodagreen, Crowd Lu and Tanya Chua from Taiwan are also on the list. Chua is an old friend and regular performer at the festival and considers it a good way to communicate with fans.
"I hope that I can make more good friends here and get more musical inspiration," Chua says.
