Modern dance inspired by Mongolian nomads

An original modern dance inspired by the lives of Mongolian nomads will be premiered by the Jin Xing Dance Theatre next Tuesday.

“Different Loneliness” was choreographed by Jin Xing herself after taking her dance troupe to live with nomads on the steppes of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in north China.

The production at Daning Theatre marks the first time the famous dancer blends Mongolian ethnic and cultural elements into a modern dance of bold and unrestrained movements.

Jin said she wished that isolated and lonely urbanites could experience the steppes and rejuvenate themselves with a different kind of solitude.

Jin, founder and director of the dance theater, is one of China’s most famous dancers as well as a ballerina, choreographer, actress, talk show host and talent show judge.

To interpret the nomad culture and optimistic spirit using modern body language, Jin led her young dancers to dwell in the steppes. They lived close to nature and experienced the solitude, exuberance and optimism of the life there.

“The young dancers were so excited to see the broader horizon,” Jin said. “On the grasslands you see cows and sheep. It’s face to face with nature. You don’t have the concept of time there, but you can feel it flowing.”

The performance will be accompanied by the 10-person band, Anda Union from Inner Mongolia, playing traditional instruments such as the morin khuur, a string instrument.

“Their music is so ethnic. The moment you hear the melody, you’ll have an image in your mind. I could turn the whole production into a folk dance if I added some folk dance,” Jin said.

Jin founded the Jin Xing Theatre in 1999 in Beijing, and moved it to Shanghai a year later. It’s China’s first private modern dance ensemble. The repertoire includes “Shanghai Tango,” “Carmina Burana,” “From East to West,” “Shanghai Beauty” and “China Project.”

In 1991 Jin won the best choreography award at the American Dance Festival for her work “Half Dream.” This year she was a judge on the Chinese TV version of “So You Think You Can Dance.”
