Movies to run gamut, from artistic to popular
THIS year, the 17th Shanghai International Film Festival will exhibit more than 300 foreign and domestic films around the city. All the movies will be presented in original versions with both Chinese and English subtitles.
The films cover a wide range of genres and boast diversified cinematic styles. The exhibition also provides a rare chance for local audiences to see many outstanding art house and experimental films on the big screen.
The festival’s organizing committee says the regular eight sections will continue to be presented. These include “Tribute to Masters,” “SIFF Highlights,” “Focus China,” “Reproduced Classics,” “Multi-perspective,” “Touch 3D,” “Global Village” and “IMAX Vision.”
Films have been selected for screening according to both artistic and popular criteria in a bid to provide audiences with strong viewing choices and alternative options to those produced by the Hollywood system.
Movie buffs will have a chance to see the representative works of past masters, including Italian filmmaker Roberto Rossellini, French director Alain Renais, and Chinese directors Jiang Wen and Wu Tianming.
Old domestic movies starring actress Ruan Lingyu — “Love and Obligation” and “Goddess” — which were released in the 1930s, have been newly restored and will be shown during the festival.
Critically acclaimed films such as “Blue Jasmine,” “Dallas Buyers Club,” “Like Father, Like Son” and “Sacro GRA” will also be offered.
