Museum pays tribute to filmmaker Xie

To commemorate the 90th birth anniversary of the late film master Xie Jin, Shanghai Film Museum is presenting screenings of Xie’s works, hosting forums and an exhibition about his life and career.

Through February 28, eight of Xie films will be screened, including “Two Stage Sisters,” “The Red Detachment of Women,” “Hibiscus Town,” “The Opium War” and “The Herdsman.”

The films cover a wide range of genres and demonstrate the maturation of Xie’s cinematography and directing style in different phases of his life. Some of the films have influenced many people and young directors across China during the later half of the 20th century.

The legendary Shanghai filmmaker died in 2008 at the age of 85. Many of his films won awards, both in China and overseas.

Xie is regarded as a monumental figure in Chinese cinema for his artistic achievements, patriotism, honesty and intellectual power.

A Shanghai Film Museum official says Xie’s movies are full of emotions, poetry and humanism. The series commemoration events are titled “A Burning Life” to pay tribute to the director’s life-long devotion to film. The museum will also host an exhibition of Xie’s film scripts, properties, costumes and valuable photos.
