NDR orchestra to perform

NDR Radiophilharmonie from Hannover, Germany will present a New Year’s concert at Shanghai Oriental Art Center tomorrow.

The program will include Rossini’s “William Tell Overture,” Bizet’s “Carmen Suite,” Johann Strauss Jr’s “Fledermaus Ouverture,” “Annen-Polka,” “Kaiserwalzer” and “Tritsch Tratsch Polka.”

Established in 1950 as the symphony orchestra of NDR (Norddeutscher Rundfunk, North German Broadcasting), the orchestra has built a reputation far beyond the broadcasting area of the company.

The orchestra not only tours internationally but also produced many recordings. They have worked with renowned soloists like Anne-Sophie Mutter, Gidon Kremer Sabine Meyer and Frank Peter Zimmermann.

Lawrence Foster from the United States will conduct this New Year’s concert.

He is the music director of the Orchestre National de Montpellier in France and Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon, Portugal.

The septuagenarian Foster also has been appointed music director of Orchestre Philharmonique de Marseille.

South Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son will join the concert and play the concert piece by Carla Maria von Weber.

Son was the silver medal winner at the 13th International Van Cliburn Piano Competition held in 2009. She has performed with leading orchestras including New York Philharmonic Orchestra and NHK Symphony Orchestra.
