Native son returns for new art show

"SHANGHAI-TOKYO-PARIS-SHANGHAI," an exhibition featuring the paintings of Zhou Gang, is now on view at Long Museum Pudong through March 29.
As its globe-trotting title suggests, the show traces the life and career path of Zhou, who was born in Shanghai in 1958 and studied traditional ink-wash painting at Shanghai Normal University.
In 1987, he relocated to Tokyo to study modern art and Japanese art history.
Three years later, he embarked on another artistic journey to France, eventually obtaining a doctorate degree at Paris University.
The exhibition, which brings Zhou back to his native city, features about 90 paintings created over a span of 35 years.
With his solid foundation in traditional Chinese ink-wash painting as well as his understanding of Western art, Zhou's paintings straddle two worlds. His delicate Oriental brush strokes depict scenes of everyday life in Paris and the sweeping natural beauty of Tibetan landscapes in China.
With humanistic care, he captures the charms of the Paris cafe scene as well as the melancholy and ennui that exist just below the surface.
According to the artist, he seeks to infuse his paintings with a dreamy and poetic ambience to distance them from reality. "Perhaps this is my way of lamenting for the good old days," he said.
Now back in town, Zhou says he enjoys spending time in the former French Concession, an area where he used to work. "No matter where I go, I'll always have my roots here," he explained.

Date: Through March 29, 9am-5pm
Venue: Long Museum Pudong
Address: 210, Lane 2255, Luoshan Rd, Pudong New Area
