One Egg charity run to benefit needy children

Around 3,000 runners are expected to take part in the annual 50-kilometer One Egg charity run for needy children on April 19.

This year the run will be held in Jinshan District, following runs in past years in the Pudong New Area, Zhujiajiao water town, Chongming Island and Suzhou City.

The course has not yet been decided.

The run will benefit children under age 18 who are from migrant workers’ families, those who are handicapped, who come from rural areas or who are left-behind in the countryside by parents going to a city for work.

When it was first organized, the event donated funds to provide one nutritious egg per day to a needy primary school pupil in a rural area, hence the name One Egg run. Today the goals are wider and the run funds various grassroots NGOs.

Since 2011, the project organized by Shanghai United Foundation has raised 7.39 million yuan (US$1.2 million), benefiting almost 160,000 children in health, education, safety and social inclusion.

Runners can register at the official website (baozou.lianquan.org.cn/) and its wechat platform “shlianquan.”

Participants are encouraged to seek pledges and donations from family, friends and others. All donations and their use will be posted on the website.

Fifty kilometers can be difficult for many people, so organizers will partner with PALA100 Home Fitness to provide fitness and endurance training for the run.

“It is more than a sports event with charity purpose. It is teamwork achieved by friends, families, and colleagues together,” says Cao Haiyan from Shanghai United Foundation.

“For some people, it usually takes a day to cover the 50 kilometers. It’s a showcase of friendship and love. Some participants will be costumed, making it livelier,” she says.

Over several years, the number of participants has increased from 61 to more than 2,000 last year.

The last event took place on April 20, 2013, in Pudong, where 2,273 runners in 392 teams started out. Around 55 percent completed the run. The event raised 4.34 million yuan.

This year, the number of runners is expected to reach 3,000, according to organizers.

“Children are the hope of families and society, representing the future,” Cao says. “The project aims to help realize children’s dreams and give them a healthy environment.”
