Painter creates his own language of art

IN modern and contemporary art history, Luo Erchun doesn't belong to any group or school; he doesn't represent any style, either. He sticks to his own language of art.

A solo exhibition of nearly 70 of Luo's latest canvases and ink-wash paintings is underway at the Shanghai Art Museum through June 11.

A native of Hunan Province, Luo entered Suzhou Art College at the age of 16. Graduating in 1951, he entered the Department of Oil Painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.

"Since then, he starts a long yet remarkable art path," comments Li Dajun, art consultant at Tsinghua University. "He has witnessed the vicissitudes of society, China's art community and its art education."

But his art philosophy and vision have not wavered.

Under the tutorship of Yan Wenliang (1893-1988), one of the Chinese pioneers who learned Western oil paintings in France, Luo's canvas appears quite free in brush strokes and colors.

Michael Sullivan, a world-famous art critic, says he is honored to know Luo and his art and considers Luo's status "unparalleled in China's contemporary art scene."

Artists Wu Guanzhong and Ai Zhongxin and many others praise Luo's work.

But the artist himself keeps a low profile and lives in a quiet world of his own.

"Several decades ago, I already pointed out that art doesn't need to be cloned," Luo says. "There is no need to copy others. An artist should always insist on maintaining independence of thought and creativity in art."

Luo's subjects, whether countryside landscapes or figures, seem less important than the ambience the artist conjures up. Viewers forget words like technique, backdrop or tableau: What stretches in front of the eyes is a vast space of peace, harmony and elegance.

After his retirement, Luo remained in Paris to appreciate the Western artistic environment that inspired many of his latest artworks, representing the culmination of his life and art.
