Ring in the new year with classical music concert

BOTH traditional Chinese and Western classic pieces will help heat up the Shanghai Grand Theater stage this Sunday to celebrate the arrival of 2015.
It will be the Shanghai Conservatory of Music’s fifth New Year Concert since launching the tradition in 2010. With more than 20 New Year concerts to be staged in Shanghai this year, the conservatory is determined to make its performance both comprehensive and fun.
Well-known baritone Liao Changyong, soprano Huang Ying, violinist Ning Feng and dizi (Chinese flute) player Tang Junqiao will all be a part of the concert.
The Conservatory’s Percussion Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra will draw the curtain with the joyful Chinese piece “Flying Dragon and Jumping Tiger” while Tang will follow up with “Festival Lights” as a wish for a good year.
“It is a piece on everyone’s lips, that’s why I chose it for the concert,” says Tang. “Everybody should have fun in the New Year.”
Well-known pieces like Strauss’s “Voice of Spring,” Korsakov’s “Capriccio Espagnole” and Sarasate’s “Zigeunerweisen” will all be heard at the concert.
Leroy Anderson’s “Typewriter” will be another big highlight of the concert. A real old-fashioned typewriter together with a typist will be set beside the conductor. Every letter the typist types will be part of the music just like a percussionist beating his or her drum.
